Lay Member for Research Ethics Committee

Edge Hill University

Location:  Ormskirk
Salary:  Voluntary (expenses paid)
Post Type:  Part Time
Closing Date:  Thursday 08 December 2022
Reference:  URESC01-1122

As part of Edge Hill University’s research ethics strategy we are looking to appoint one external lay member to sit on our University Research Ethics Sub-Committee (URESC).

We are looking for an individual who has a broad interest in ethical issues and who will provide a balanced view of proposed research studies from a lay perspective. An external lay member is defined as somebody who is independent of Edge Hill University meaning that they do not have a past or current close connection with us.

Lay members take a full committee role and have the key task of providing a public perspective in the ethical scrutiny of research proposals.

Lay members are typically expected to attend three meetings in the academic year (preferably in person but virtually if required) which take place during the working day. As a committee member you will contribute to discussions about the implementation and operationalisation of the University’s Framework for Research Ethics and associated research governance policies across the institution. You will also be asked to comment on research taking place under the HTA (Human Tissue Authority) license.

Lay members, in common with other committee members, are expected to maintain confidentiality in respect to applications for ethical approval, information on research participants, online and committee meeting discussion and deliberations and related matters.

Although the post is voluntary, reasonable related travel expenses will be paid and training and support will be provided. Appointments are for an initial term of three years with the ability to reapply for a possible extension after that.
