Your discipline. Your passion. Our success, together.

About You

You will have a PHD in Linguistics, within a topic that is related to the research project (Working with native speakers of the Pearl Lagoon Basin, and their Miskitu Language). Experience using up-to-date techniques and equipment to collect linguistic material is desirable, and should be sufficient for a comprehensive grammatical, textual, syntactic and lexical description of this stable mixed language and its culture.  You will also have experience in conducting research of the highest quality in constructing typologies and descriptions of languages. You will have a collaborative approach and demonstrate the ability to operate flexibly, reliably and on your own initiative whilst ensuring research rigour and integrity.

About the Role

You will provide quality research support on a Leverhulme Trust Research Grant funded project entitled  “Working with native speakers of the Pearl Lagoon Basin Miskitu Language.” This project aims to use up-to-date techniques and equipment to collect linguistic material sufficient for a comprehensive grammatical, textual, syntactic and lexical description of this stable mixed language and its culture (which blends Amerindian, African and European elements). This is a previously undescribed form of a Misumalpan (Amerindian) language of Nicaragua, and it has undergone profound influence from over three centuries of contact with Caribbean Creole English and latterly from Spanish. This has led to a combination of linguistic elements which is unique in the world’s languages.
