About the Role

As a Senior Lecturer in Primary and Childhood Education (Physical Education), you will make a significant contribution to the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate Physical Education curriculum. You will bring Qualified Teacher Status and substantial experience of curriculum design and delivery in Physical Education, with opportunities to contribute to university based Initial Teacher Education, including provision at Level 7.

You will play an active role in supporting high quality teaching, supervision and assessment, enriching the student experience and supporting excellent graduate outcomes. Alongside teaching responsibilities, you will contribute to the research activities of one of the Faculty’s Research Units and meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework. Where appropriate, you will also have opportunities to engage with the Faculty’s research centres and supervise postgraduate students.

The role offers scope to contribute to wider Faculty activity, including partnership working, knowledge exchange and continuing professional development aligned to the Faculty’s strategic priorities.

About You

You will be an enthusiastic, skilled and collegiate professional with excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to delivering an outstanding experience for students, staff and external partners within the field of Physical Education.

You will have extensive experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and a proven ability to design and deliver high quality, inclusive curricula. Your qualifications, subject expertise and professional practice will demonstrate your commitment to enriching the student experience and supporting student success.

You will ideally bring experience of teaching, research and/or knowledge exchange in one or more areas related to Physical Education, such as mental health and wellbeing, workforce development, special educational needs and inclusion, or trauma informed approaches. Experience of supervising postgraduate students and a developing or established research profile in Physical Education would be advantageous, alongside engagement in externally funded research, knowledge exchange or professional development activity.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional services manager to join the School of Education and Community as School Administration, Quality Assurance and Governance Manager (School of Education and …..) within a dynamic and forward‑thinking Faculty of Education. This senior role provides strategic and operational leadership that supports the effective running of the School, ensuring robust academic administration, high standards of quality assurance and effective governance.

Working closely with the Head of School and as a key member of the School’s professional services leadership, you will contribute to planning, policy development and operational decision‑making. You will lead and develop a team of professional services staff, ensuring that administrative, quality and governance processes are delivered consistently, efficiently and in line with institutional policies and external regulatory requirements.

You will work collaboratively with academic colleagues, Faculty teams and central professional services to support operational planning, portfolio development and the delivery of School and Faculty priorities. This will include contributing to initiatives that enhance the student experience and outcomes, as well as providing data‑informed insight to support budget monitoring, resource planning and effective decision‑making.

Operating with an appropriate degree of autonomy, you will exercise professional judgement in coordinating administrative, quality assurance and governance activity, addressing complex operational issues and supporting compliance across a range of institutional and external frameworks. Eligibility Criteria

External examiners are typically academic staff of other UK HEIs and are academically qualified to at least the level of the qualification in the subject to be examined.

Individuals seeking to become external examiners of the University are expected to demonstrate appropriate evidence of:

1. Competence and experience in the fields covered by the module/ programme of study to which they will be assigned.

2. Sufficient standing, credibility and breadth of experience within their discipline to be able to command the respect of academic and, where appropriate, other professional peers.

3. Knowledge and understanding of the UK sector agreed reference points for the setting and maintenance of academic standards (FHEQ, Degree Characteristics Statements and Subject Benchmark Statements) and familiarity with the standard to

be expected of students in relation to their award.

4. Knowledge and understanding of the standards and/or requirements of Professional and Statutory Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs) that govern students’ awards (where applicable).

5. Awareness of current developments in the design and delivery of programmes in their subject including competence in and experience of designing and managing assessment.

6. Current employment status including eligibility to work in the United Kingdom and (where relevant) PSRB registration.

7. Fluency in the English language.

Individuals without previous experience will normally join an experienced team of examiners and will be mentored by an experienced examiner in the same or cognate subject area.

Role

The main responsibility of an External Examiners is to confirm that academic standards are appropriately set and maintained and therefore, their principal duties are to:

• Review and approve examination papers in a timely manner that contribute to a student’s final award and any other assessment material as agreed between the examiner and the programme team.
• Review and approve the content, learning outcomes and assessment of negotiated learning modules leading to the award of Student-Initiated Credit.
• Review samples of work that have been marked and internally moderated in order to be satisfied that students have been graded fairly through the use of marking criteria and in accordance with the University’s Academic Regulations.
• Produce a comprehensive Annual Report that covers a range of considerations including confirmation whether national threshold standards are being met or exceeded and that students have achieved the intended learning outcomes for the award of credit and qualifications.

Whilst the majority of work undertaken will be carried out remotely, External Examiners may be required to attend assessment boards at the Ormskirk Campus and school visits on an annual basis.

Salary Details

External examiners are paid an annual fee of approximately £620.31 (inclusive of holiday pay) based on the time allocations defined below plus reimbursement of expenses, as appropriate. Total fees may vary slightly dependent on the size of the provision covered by an External Examiner. The production and submission of the annual report is paid at a higher rate of £200 for the full 7.5 hours work.
